Уровень сложности: простой (elementary)
Жанр: детектив

On a Saturday Molly Clarkson was celebrating her 50th birthday. All her relatives had come: her children (Diane, Jackie and Roger) and her brother Albert. They were all used to asking Molly for money, except Jackie, who still lived with her mother. That night one by one they all asked her for money again, but she refused saying that no one would get money any more from her. They were quite upset and angry. The next morning Roger was woken up by a cry from his mothers room. When he got there he saw Diane coming out, who had just found her mother dead.

A young lady named Mary Mоrstan comes to consult Hоlmеs upon a case which she assures him is very unusual. Miss Mоrstan’s father disappeared some years previously under suspicious circumstances. He had obtained twelve months leave from his Indian regiment and sent word to her to meet him at his hotel. Whilst the hotel confirmed that he was staying there they informed Miss Morstan that he had gone out and not returned. Enquiries (запросы) at the time produced no result. A few years after this disappearance an advertisement appeared in a paper asking for Miss Mоrstan to reveal (открыть) her address. Upon the advice of her employer she did so and that same day she received a valuable pearl in the post. Since then she has received one pearl a year for the last six years.

Miss Mоrstаn has now received a letter which urges her to meet with the sender that night. The anonymous sender permits her to bring two friends as long as they are not police.

My name is Nick Cаrrаwаy. I was born in a big city in the Middle West. My family has been well-known there for seventy years. My father's university was Yale at Nеw Hаven, Connecticut and I went there, too. I graduated in 1915 and then went to fight in the Great War.

When I came back from the War, life in the Middle Wеst was dull. I could not settle down. I decided to go East and learn the bond (облигация, ценная бумага) business. My father agreed to pay my expenses for the first year. So, in 1922, I went to New York. I had planned to stay in the East for several years, but I was there for only one summer. This book is the story of that summer.

I arrived in New York in spring. The weather was already warm and the city was hot and uncomfortable. I looked around for somewhere cheap to live. I found a little house about twenty miles from New York, near the village of Wеst Egg.

My house was on Long Island, near the sea. It stood between two enormous houses that had been built for milliоnaires. The house on the right of my house had a
swimming pool and was surrounded by beautiful lawns (лужайки) and gardens. It was Gаtsby's house. And this is Gаtsby's story, but of course, I didn't know Gаtsby then...

Every year, the bank rewarded (награждал) two of its employees. The two employees who had worked the hardest were given a reward. The bank gave the two employees and their families a holiday. This year, 1977, the reward was a holiday in Mauritius. Mauritius is a small island in the Indian Ocean. Many tourists visit Mauritius. And many of them enjoy water-sports and sea-fishing.

Edna Murgatroyd had come to Mauritius with her husband. John Higgins was not married – he was travelling alone. The Murgatroyds had been married for twenty-five years, and Edna was never happy about anything or anybody. The days passed quickly. Every day, the Murgatroyds did the same things. They sat on the beach. Edna sat under a sun umbrella (зонт от солнца) and read romantic novels. Roger did what his wife told him to do. But at last days of their holiday something happened that changed things that were the same for many years.

In the 1970s, many new houses and apartments were built in Dublin. In some parts of the city, the old houses were very bad. Dublin City Council knocked down (сносил) these bad homes. The council built new houses and apartments for the people who lived in the old houses.

The worst houses were in Mayo Road. These houses were more than a hundred years old. Rain came in through the roofs (крыши). The walls were damp (сырые). People did not want to live in these old buildings any more. The council knocked down all the houses in Mayo Road – except one. One old man did not want to move out of his home. The council sent him many letters, but he refused to leave. By why? The old man did not want to say anything…
